"It was a pretty miserable display of offense," QU coach JD Gravina told WGEM radio. "It was probably the worst shot selection that I've ever been a part of as a coach. "We planned to penetrate and kick and hit the post and kick, but I don't remember any time in the first half when we did that." The Lady Hawks (10-2, 2-2 GLVC) shot just 5 for 28 in the first half and fell behind the Norse 27-19 at the break. It didn't get much better for the Lady Hawks in the second half. They fell behind the Norse (8-4, 2-2) by 22 points in suffering their first-ever back-to-back losses during Gravina's tenure. QU's starting unit combined to make just 11 of 41 shot attemp...

"I do think (the layoff) hurt us, there's no question," QU coach JD Gravina told WGEM radio. The loss was the first of the season for the 12th-ranked Lady Hawks, who fell to 10-1 overall and 2-1 inside the GLVC. QU shot just 33.9 percent from the field (20 for 59) and was just 3 of 12 from 3-point range. Point guard Whintae Irby was the only Lady Hawk to reach double figures with 10 points. "It's not a game that we were upset to lose, it's just the way we played after the first 10 minutes or so," Gravina said. "(Indianapolis star center Samantha) Meissel picked up two fouls and then we kind of relaxed after that and their other post players killed us." Mei...

He then jumped to WGEM-TV in Quincy, Ill., and got his feet wet in the business (literally) as he reported during the devastating Midwest flood of 1993. At WGEM-TV, Pat reported, produced and anchored, even including stints in weather and sports. After a year in the Midwest, Pat moved to the South, spending just eight months at WLEX-TV in Lexington, Ky. While there, he was honored with an Associated Press award for keeping his cool while being shot at live on television. He then headed even deeper into the South to WBRC-TV in Birmingham, Ala. There, Pat was the co-host of the No. 1 rated morning show, "Good Day Alabama." His series of reports on the corrupt Birmingham Water Work...

Well, the gym was filled beyond capacity, WGEM did a live television broadcast complete with a pre-game show, and afterward, the players said it was the best atmosphere they had ever been around. "I'm in awe," said Jordan Witte, a junior guard for QHS. It came down to the final minute as the Raiders whittled an 11-point deficit to just two with 25.2 seconds to play. But QHS's Mitchel Rein sank a pair of free throws -- the Blue Devils were just 3 of 10 from the line in the final minute -- to seal the victory. "I don't know how many detractors there were out there," QND coach Scott Douglas said. "But if they came to the game tonight, I don't know how they ca...

"We made a great push at the end of the second quarter to get up by six points at half," QHS coach Sean Taylor told WGEM radio. "We have to come out better in the second half. ... Springfield's a good team. We didn't make shots, didn't guard as well as we probably should and missed a lot of free throws. Doing that stuff against a good team is going to come back to haunt you." And it did. The Blue Devils (6-1) led 32-26 at the halftime break, but Springfield scored the first eight points of the second half to take a 34-32 lead. A 10-foot jumper by Isiah Hale snapped a 38-38 tie with 90 seconds left in the third quarter that wound up giving the Senators (6-2) the lead f...

The property has been owned by the Quincy Broadcasting Company since 1968 and houses the offices and some of the studios of WGEM AM-FM and TV. Quincy Broadcasting is owned by Quincy Newspapers, Inc. The building has not been known as the New Tremont for more than 70 years. Smith said the name change was appropriate since next year will be the 100th anniversary of the structure. There are 83 apartments in the building and when the refurbishing is complete there will be a variety of one-, two- and even three-bedroom dwellings. Thirty apartments have already been remodeled. A new-look foyer/lobby area now offers a receptionist, fountain, plants and other amen...

The temperatures are not expected to rise to near normal before early next week, according to WGEM meteorologist Rich Cain. But first, Cain expects a snow storm will hit late Wednesday, with accumulations of about 3 inches. It should last all night, tapering off to occasional flurries, followed by a blast of cold air. Friday's temperatures will range from 6 above to 6 below. The good news is that the cold means there is little moisture in the air, so the snow will be light and fluffy. Quincy can expect to see the frigid temperatures continue through at least the weekend. Workers who must be outdoors are being advised to bundle up and to pay attention to si...
