Man Charged In Fire At University Place Elementary; Students Get Extended Break
Keith Ward, spokesperson for Huntsville City Schools, told WHNT NEWS 19 on Monday afternoon that students at University Place will not return until January 11 so crews can make repairs to the kitchen. The fire broke out in a trash dumpster near the back of the school. Firefighters were able to put out the fire quickly, but it did damage part of the school's kitchen. Police charged William R. Tanner with second-degree arson and interfering with government operations. They say Tanner apparently lit the fire in the dumpster in order to stay warm, because he didn't have anywhere to go in the cold weather.
