For example, despite hard work and some improvement, the rate for Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools is 72.7. That's slightly ahead of the state's rate of 71.7, but still lags behind the rates of Guilford (79.9) and Wake (78.4) counties. When an associate's degree is really the bare minimum for entry into the high-tech job market, it's unacceptable that many of our students aren't even earning their high-school diploma. We need more individuals, businesses, churches and organizations to get behind efforts such as one coordinated by United Way of Forsyth County to raise the graduation rate. This effort is directly tied to our third issue, Access to Higher Education. Enrollme...

Region may get freezing rain or sleet
Most school systems in the region, including Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, will remain closed for a second day. After consulting with school-transportation officials yesterday afternoon, Superintendent Don Martin decided to go ahead and cancel school, Theo Helm, a system spokesman, said. "The neighborhood roads and side streets are still rough," Helm said. "It's safer for the buses not to go over them." The possibility of freezing rain also contributed to the decision, he said. Yesterday's snow date will be made up on June 9 and today's snow date will be made up June 10, Helm said. City and state road crews said yesterday that they have made go...
School's out (mostly), and so are the sleds
Most schools across the area are closed, including the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County schools. Day classes at Forsyth Technical Community College have also been cancelled. Before the snow vanished entirely, Rachel Hoeing and her children, Jake Hoeing, 6, and Anna Hoeing, 4, took to a hill on Elizabeth Avenue to enjoy a couple of hours of sled riding. "I bet we go out again tomorrow," Rachel Hoeing said. "I think it's probably going to be around for a while. We can't stay in the house all day with school being canceled." Hoeing said that because she was still hesitant about driving, she and the children planned to walk to dinner last night. Jennif...
Snow returns to Triad
Theo Helm, a spokesman for Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, said that a determination about whether school will be canceled or delayed on Monday won't be made until Sunday afternoon or night. "Our goal is to make the call as early as possible so parents can make plans," he said. Duke Energy crews are hoping for the best but preparing for the worst, said Tom Shiel, a spokesman for the utility. In terms of the risk of outages, areas in the northern part of the state, including the Triad, may fare better than other parts of the state, Shiel said. That's because the Triad is expected to get mostly snow, which won't be as likely to stick to limbs and power lines as ic...
