The Thai Forest Tradition

Commonly practised in Thailand, Burma and Sri Lanka is a branch of the Theravada Buddhist tradition called the Thai Forest tradition. One of the distinguishing characteristics of the Thai Forest tradition is its strict adherence to the original teachings and rule of monastic discipline laid down by the Buddha. The Forest tradition actually predates the Buddha as it was a common practice amongst spiritual seekers in ancient India to practise the act of renunciation by wandering into the wilderness. Thai Buddhist council severs ties with Perth monastery over women

Phra Bhramabvanco recently allowed two bhikkhuni, or female monks, be ordained in Perth although the Theravada sect of Buddhism arguably forbids such a practice. The Thai Sangha had initially threatened to excommunicate the British-born monk, but instead decided to sever ties with his monastery as a warning against more bhikkhuni ordinations, The Nation said. 'Women can be ordained only in the Mahayana Buddhist sect, but in Theravada, we don't have bhikkhuni,' Somdej Phra Phutthacharn, a chief adviser to the Sangha, said. There are two main sects in Buddhism - Theravada (the little wheel) and Mahayana (the big wheel) - with the former cl...
Wat expelled over female ordination

It is forbidden to ordain a woman as a bhikkhuni (female monk) in Thai Theravada Buddhism, the dominant sect in this country, because there is no lineage to Theravada bhikkhuni in Thailand. But British-born abbot Phra Brahmvamso allowed the ordination in late October and participated in the ceremony despite opposition from many senior monks. The expulsion of Bodhinyana monastery, a branch of Wat Pah Pong Forest Sangha in Ubon Ratchathani province, does not mean its temple status is revoked. The temple was granted permission by the Australian government, the council's secretariat office director, Amnat Buasiri, said, citing the council's meeting on Dec 11. The council'...
