Newtown natives find happiness in their hometown
Mary and Clifford both grew up on dairy farms in Newtown, only about a half mile apart from each other. Clifford, a few years older than Mary, was a friend of Mary's brother, so Mary saw him when the boys got together at the Ferris home. "He was waiting until I grew up a bit before he could go out with me," Mary said. Hearing about it now, it sounds as though when Mary and Clifford were young singles, the social scene was a bit simpler than it is today, in the era of electronic social networking. In the 1950s, there were a fewer distractions than we have now with the Internet and cell phones. "I baby-sat a lot," Mary recalled. "When I was in high school, he was at UConn.
