UConn, Texas Suddenly Heading Opposite Ways (15)
STORRS, Conn. -- It may be too early to talk about teams passing each other on the escalator. Then again, when the students at a school with two national championship banners hanging in the rafters storm the court after a win, all bets are off. Thus, it's fair to observe that Connecticut is suddenly on the ride going up -- and Texas is just as sudden on a trip down. There actually isn't that much difference between the two teams. Connecticut's 88-74 win Saturday, a near-total domination after halftime that was followed up by the rush onto the Gampel Pavilion floor, only made it seem like there was a big difference -- in favor of the unranked team, not the one ranked No. 1.

Espionage On the American Orient Express (13)
Imagine cleverly disguised world leaders congregating on such a train, along with all that old money. And now, according to reports, the American Orient Express is scheduled to start up again in 2011. To what end is the resurgence of the American Orient Express boarding passengers next year? Perhaps another power play espionage plot? These old fogies are no dummies you know. With the ill gotten return on their initial investments via your tax dollars, sock money used to buy up property cheap, investments with Goldman Sachs and other robber barons, there is not telling what sinister plans are afoot. Just like on the genuine Orient Express, sinister and world shaping events can take pla...
Stimulus funds going for green jobs in state (12)
"Washington is uniquely situated to become a leader in the field of green energy," Murray said. But "we have to build the workforce before we do anything else." Such jobs now account for a tiny fraction, or about 25,000 workers, of the total employment in Washington, said Tim Sweeney, spokesman for the Washington State Workforce Training and Education Coordinating Board, recipient of the latest recovery grant. But Sweeney said Washington in particular has a need for green-energy workers. The state, for instance, has adopted regulations requiring most utilities to draw 15 percent of their energy from solar, wind, biomass or other alternative sources by 2020. It also has set gr...
New Calif. water policy aims to save state's key estuary, but critics say it falls short (12)
The perilously low populations of salmon and native fish are symptoms, according to numerous scientists, of a crashing ecosystem in the West Coast's largest estuary. Numerous theories abound for the decline, from too much water being pumped from the delta for drinking and irrigation to the use of agricultural chemicals. Whatever the cause, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and state lawmakers believe they took a step to restoring the delta when they passed policy reforms last November and approved an $11 billion water bond to go on the November ballot. Schwarzenegger said it would launch the nation's largest environmental restoration project since the federal effort to save the...
Ken Davidoff's Baseball Insider (12)
In honor of the recently arrived new year, let's use two measures of evaluation for these players: Health, and Happiness. "Health" will cover actual health, as well as statistical production: Did the player stay on the field? Did he deliver sufficiently on his expectations?"Happiness" will cover the player's and team's satisfaction with one another. Were they a good fit? How much, if any, tension existed? The evaluations are subjective, of course, and in some cases I've wimped out and offered an "Eh," or "Sort of" or "Pretty much." When there's a "No" on "Happiness," I'll explain that unhappiness. And obviously, since many of these deals are still ongoing, the judgments rendered...

Wal-Mart Brings Zero Jobs to Chicago (10)

As the Wal-Mart commercials used to say: "Next stop, home." Based on their analysis of retail sales, the researchers conclude: "These estimates support the contention that large-city Wal-Marts absorb retail sales from other city stores without significantly expanding the market...Overall, the weight of evidence suggests that the Wal-Mart opening on the West Side led to the displacement of a range of businesses. There is no evidence that Wal-Mart sparked any significant net growth in economic activity or employment in the area." The researchers in this new study suggest that their findings are very similar to a number of other studies on "the Wal-Mart effect" that have been p...
