Elizabeth Taylor Film Festival in Phoenix (15)
Films such as "Little Women" and "National Velvet" are targeted toward a younger crowd, while "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" and "Giant" appeal to a more mature audience. "We're hoping this will be something grandma and grandpa can take their grandkids to as well as couples going out for a date night," Simplot said. Individual movie tickets to the festival, which will be Saturday and Sunday at the Harkins Chris-Town 14, are $10. A VIP cocktail and hors d'oeuvres party ($75 admission) will be held Friday, where attendees can take pictures with Elizabeth Taylor look-alikes, enter a raffle and watch a screening of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof." One hundred percent of ticket sales will b...
Bulgaria's 'green' energy boom sparks fears (12)
This month it imposed a half-year moratorium on new "green" energy projects in a bid to sift out those with serious financing and prevent a vital Black Sea bird migration route from being built over with wind farms. "Too many tickets have been sold for this show," Economy and Energy Minister Traicho Traykov told an investors' forum earlier this month."We need to get the sector in order," he said. The number of "green" energy projects in Bulgaria has exploded from almost nil just a few years ago to a proposed 12,000 megawatts (MW) from wind farms, solar energy parks and small hydropower stations, a government expert said. That figure is equal to Bulgaria's current in...
Long life and happiness in Japan's sunshine isles (12)
taking turns on a traditional three-stringed guitar, eating dragon fruit, necking guava juice laced with awamori and "pushing the happiness" until 3am. Sharing the love with locals has never been so much fun.Welcome to Japan's sub-tropical alter ego. An island archipelago flung 1,000km across the Pacific, Okinawa is Japan, but not as we know it. Even the Japanese regard Okinawa as exotically foreign, and until its annexation to mainland Japan as Okinawa Prefecture in 1879, it was exactly that. The Ryukyu Kingdom was for centuries a self-governing tributary state to China, before being invaded by the mainland Satsuma clan at the start of the 17th century. The capital Nah...
Glasgow sets out sustainable 'green' vision (11)
The project aims to transform the city into a hub of the sustainable energy sector, delivering jobs and training. It will play a major role in attempts to regenerate communities and tackle fuel poverty over the next 10 years. Recommendations in the report include initiatives such as the creation of systems to turn the city's sewage and municipal waste into biogas. There would be a drive to increase the use of biogas and electric vehicles. Moves could also be made to develop district heating system and gradually phase out electric, coal and oil heating. This would go hand-in-hand with the development of natural biogas-fuelled combined heat and power systems...
Haiti quake American donations (11)
a recession and job losses, the contagious giving has come in all forms old and new, underscoring the heartfelt, if fleeting generosity of Americans. In addition to Pacheco's old-fashioned volunteerism, Illinois residents have joined an unprecedented text-message funding campaign for the Red Cross. They have given nearly $200,000 to the Salvation Army through the Internet, not red kettles. Merchants are not just putting out jars but Tweeting promotions to donate proceeds of everything from car washes to pedicures to the Haiti-Ade cocktail making the rounds in Chicago. The outpouring for Haiti is likely the largest immediate response by Americans to an international disaster...
Clinical St George's hammer St Patrick (11)
Anthony Ewurun netted a hat-trick as St George's found little difficulty in disposing of a poor St Patrick side at the Tedesco Stadium yesterday. St George's took only three minutes to forge ahead when Ewurun pounced on a poor Luke Sciberras back-pass, and after sprinting inside the box drove the ball home. Ewurum almost struck again minutes later when he received a good ball from Silvio Sciberras but his shot was blocked by Sean Mintoff. On 24 minutes, St George's were awarded a penalty after Josef Dalli was floored in the area by Juergen Farrugia but Glenn Bonello had his shot saved by Mintoff. St George's doubled their lead on 29 minutes when Ewurum served...
CMS job fair out, teacher auditions in (11)
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will require prospective teachers to audition at "teaching camps" this year as part of a focus on finding talent rather than just filling classrooms. "We will discontinue the annual Spring Job Fair because it was designed to attract high numbers of applicants, not necessarily top performers," says a report Superintendent Peter Gorman sent to the school board Friday. "Instead, we will establish teaching camps where applicants must demonstrate teaching skills in front of a selection panel. Applicants who show strong skills will then be placed into a hiring pool." In more prosperous times, thousands lined up for the job fairs. Last...

Ketogenic diet – Latest (10)

The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, adequate-protein, low-carbohydrate diet primarily used to treat difficult-to-control (refractory) epilepsy in children. The diet mimics aspects of starvation by forcing the body to burn fats rather than carbohydrates. Normally, the carbohydrates contained in food are converted into glucose, which is then transported around the body and is particularly important in fuelling brain function. However, if there is very little carbohydrate in the diet, the liver converts fat into fatty acids and ketone bodies. The ketone bodies pass into the brain and replace glucose as an energy source. An elevated level of ketone bodies in the blood, a state known as ketosis, le...
NC Lottery Announces Transfer To Education Fund (10)

Raleigh, NC -- The North Carolina Education Lottery (NCEL) announced Tuesday a transferred to the State Education Lottery Fund. The transfer was for more than $105 million for sales from October 1 through December 21. The transfer brings the total for the first half of the Fiscal Year to more than $220 million. This transfer brings the overall tally of funds that the NCEL has generated for the education fund to over $1.35 billion. That is over $27 million more or 14 percent higher than the amount the NCEL transferred for the same time period in the previous fiscal year. The NCEL made the electronic transfer to the Office of State Budget and Management (OSBM)...
Naomi Watts lives next to Daniel Craig (10)

Daniel Craig might be moving into a cursed home in DREAM HOUSE, but at least he'll have some nice scenery nearby. Lovely Aussie Naomi Watts joins the brawny Bond in the thriller, about a man who moves his family to an idyllic small town, only to find his house possessed by the former inhabitants who were slaughtered there. Watts will play the new homeowners' neighbor, who we can probably assume either helps him investigate the murders, or was somehow involved. The AMITYVILLE-sounding movie starts filming next month in Toronto, with Jim Sheridan (MY LEFT FOOT, GET RICH OR DIE TRYIN') directing. Watts will be seen as outed CIA operative Valerie Plame in FAIR GAM...
Musical enigma has many faces (10)

Especially when such fellow musicians as Elton John, John Mellencamp, k.d. lang, Sheryl Crow, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Wilco and his old pals Crosby, Stills and Nash got up and started serenading him with his own songs. He deserves the MusiCares honour, though. His quiet humanitarianism goes way back. He's been a crusader for environmental issues forever, and active with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation since his first son, Zeke, and then his second son, Ben, a quadriplegic, were diagnosed with the disease. He's a frequent donor to the Epilepsy Foundation, too, since both he and his daughter, Sarah, have the illness. He co-founded Farm Aid with Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp i...
