Hershman following Buyer brings back memories of 1980, when Dan Quayle ran for the U.S. Senate and his political aide, Dan Coats, was elected to the U.S. House seat he held. Quayle later resigned his seat to become George H.W. Bush's vice president and Coats was appointed to replace his former boss. Republicans and Democrats alike were quick to defer Friday to Buyer, a longtime military veteran who was elected to Congress nine times, saying it was his and his wife's day.
