Excerpt from Henry Paulson's new book

I called (Bank of America CEO) Ken Lewis, who reported that after closer inspection his people now believed that Lehman's assets were in even worse shape than they had thought the previous evening. It was increasingly obvious that he didn't really want to buy Lehman. I joined Tim in his office for a conference call with Barclays at about 8 a.m. Bank Chairman Marcus Agius and CEO John Varley were on the line from London, and (President) Bob Diamond was at Barclay's midtown Manhattan offices. Varley said they were working hard on a possible deal, but had serious concerns about some of Lehman's assets, and indicated Barclays would need to leave $52 billion of them behind. I told V...
Brian Moynihan Set To Whack Greg Curl As Head Risk Manager At Bank Of America

Curl was close to Ken Lewis. For years, he advised Lewis and Lewis's predecessor, Hugh McColl, on strategy and acquisitions. He was, in other words, one of the key architects who built the behemoth Bank of America. After Lewis, Curl was the highest ranking member of what is sometimes called the "Charlotte Mafia" at the bank. When Lewis announced his resignation, he asked the board to appoint Curl immediately. They turned him down. Moynihan, the new CEO, is from outside of the Lewis-McColl circle. He's likely to want to appoint his top advisers from outside that circle as well. Now someone is leaking news of Curl's demotion to David Mildenberg at Business Week. If the past is an...
We're banking on BofA keeping headquarters here
The queasiness comes with this undeniable reality: New BofA CEO Brian Moynihan doesn't have the Southern roots that both recently retired CEO Ken Lewis or his predecessor Hugh McColl had. Lewis was born in Mississippi and grew up in Georgia. McColl was born and raised in South Carolina. And though Moynihan adamantly declared when he was chosen CEO that the headquarters would remain here, his family still lives in Boston where he is reportedly very involved in his children's school and sports activities. That involvement is admirable. But if he found a home here and moved his family here, he could boost his involvement in Charlotte-area concerns and issues. Both Lewis and McColl li...
