Medeski, Martin and Wood

IT WAS standing-room only at the Hi-Fi as Medeski, Martin and Wood took to the stage for their debut Melbourne performance. In town for just one night, the renowned New York trio rewarded fans with a generous two-hour show bristling with energy and invention. The chunky opening riffs of Big Time set the tone for the evening, creating an insistent groove as a springboard for bold, free-form improvisations. Surrounded by a veritable thicket of keyboards, John Medeski darted back and forth between acoustic piano, Hammond organ and clavinet, with occasional excursions on swirling Wurlitzer or distortion-laden melodica. Chris Wood added his own textural variation as he shifte...
Softly, softly versus full steam ahead

Working up a head of steam was not an issue for Medeski, Martin and Wood. The issue was whether all that steam could be contained in the City Recital Hall. Had anyone listened to their recordings? Here was a trio that wraps dense drumming and a walloping bottom end in swollen walls of keyboards. Medeski Martin and Wood
Within moments of Medeski, Martin and Wood playing together they knew they were on to something special. That was 19 years ago, and the trio is still creating funky grooves to grip their listeners as the wide-ranging improvisations unfold. They like the term ''homeless music'' and the unifying theme for keyboards player John Medeski, drummer Billy Martin and bassist Chris Wood is spontaneity. ''From the first few notes I knew that this was probably going to be a long-term thing,'' Martin says from New York. ''We all pretty much felt the same: that we needed to try to keep this going.'' But two decades has certainly exceeded Martin's expectations, and now he sees them ''c...
